The future of healthcare in focus: ”Together, things happen”

In march, it’s once again time for Fokus Patient, an event for the industry where the patients’ perspective takes center stage. It’s a great way to spread knowledge in Sweden and around the world, according to the initiator Penilla Gunther

On March 17-18, the Fokus Patient event ”Future Days” will take place. This industry event, with Life Science Sweden and Medtech Magazine as media partners, will center around the patient's perspective

– Of course, I am looking forward to the mix of people. I’m always delighted to see how people network and share new knowledge, says Penilla Gunther, co-founder and program manager, to Life Science Sweden.

Both Swedish and international participants will take part over the two days. It’s a great way to spread Swedish knowledge worldwide and bring new insights to Sweden, emphasizes Penilla Gunther.

– Addressing these issues in Sweden is quite new. I’ve attended conferences in Europe where these topics were discussed, which is why I believe it’s crucial to work on them here in Sweden.

The first day of the congress will focus on infectious diseases, with an emphasis on AMR (antimicrobial resistance) and vaccines. In addition, topics will explore shifting attitudes towards democracy and how societal trust affects both individuals and healthcare systems.

The second day will address non-communicable diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and how the growing issue of comorbidity calls for new solutions to improve patient care.

– I’m especially looking forward to discussions about the various combinations and connections between these diseases. While it may sound daunting, we also aim to highlight the opportunities that exist. I’ve learned a lot while organizing the program.

Fokus Patient is being held for the sixth year. What key lessons have been learned over the years?

– That it’s difficult, says Penilla Gunther with a laugh. She adds:

– Everyone says they want to collaborate within healthcare, patient groups, and life science, but it’s sometimes challenging to make it happen. The most important lesson is to keep working together. When we collaborate, things happen.

Her motivation comes from a desire to improve things. During her eight years as a member of parliament for the Christian Democrats, she led a network for equal healthcare. Her personal experiences, including being a heart transplant recipient, have also fueled her desire to create change.

– When I am in the healthcare system as a patient, I always see it as a study visit to observe how things can be improved. Life experience can also be used to help others or give a voice to those who don’t have one themselves, says Penilla Gunther.

This is Fokus Patient

The event Future Days will be held March 17-18, 2025, at the Elite Palace Hotel in central Stockholm.

Fokus Patient was launched in 2019 to bring together and create a network focused on the patient perspective.

The collaboration involves stakeholders from healthcare, patient and industry associations, pharmaceutical and medtech companies, authorities, academia, and healthcare providers, among others."
