Future drugs from Amaryllis

A Danish research team has discovered possibolities to extract drugs fro Amaryllis.
A brand new research

project from the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Copenhagen has proved that the Amaryllis plant contains substances that be used in the treatment aganst disease in the central nerve system, for example Alzheimer’s disease.

The active substance

in, among others, Galanthamin, which can be extracted from snowdrops. It is already registred as a drug substance in Reminyl, used against dementia.

The research team

has now recieved a EU grant of DKK 1,6 million to continue this research project and to, hopefully, find the base for new drugs in the future.
